Desiring God

A few weeks ago I purchased John Piper's "Desiring God". I have to say that I have found this to be one of the most spiritually provocative books that I have waded through in a long time. I am captivated by the third chapter on worship. It is like taking a drink from a firehose.

"All of the works of God culminate in the praises of His redeemed people. The climax of His happiness is the delight He takes in the echoes of His excellence in the praises of the saints. This praise is the consummation of our own joy in God. Therefore, God's pursuit of praise from us and our pursuit of pleasure in Him are the same pursuit. This is the great gospel!"

Hey Buddy, I am a big fan of John Piper. I have several books by him and the Desiring God.I believe his the best teach\preacher of our time. Your going yo love the book.

John Piper is sooo good...I used to think that he was just another old guy that my dad talked about, but he has a way of saying things that is so inspiring.

Moses was a Christian hedonist. In Heb 11:24 it says Moses considered abuse suffered for God greater wealth than all the treasures of Egypt.

David was a Christian hedonist.
He wrote, "delight yourself in the Lord." Ps 37:4

Paul commended Christian hedonism in Romans 12:8, "Let him who does acts of mercy do them with cheerfulness.

..and the ultimate Christian hedonist, Jesus Christ. "His delight was the fear of the Lord."
Is 11:3.

The desire to be happy is God given and should not be denied or resisted but directed to God for satisfaction!

Into the Mystic

I always liked the Van Morrison song, "Into the mystic", but gotta admit, I don't understand what in the world it is about. Aside from that, when I hear the word "mystic" or more directly "mysticism", it conjures up in my brain images of beaded, peace sign tatooed, nature fetished hippie types, hugging trees for some undefined type of "spiritual experience". Pretty weird, huh? I really need to work on these stereotypes I have floating around in my head. As I have been reading more and more on the missional vs. emergent thing, this whole concept of "mysticism" keeps popping up. What I can't seem to get my brain around is if the term has been adulterated in practice within the emergent movement to be more reflective of my bad stereotype or is it really about making doctrine secondary to feelings? Bringing others to Worship

You know our desire should be to bring others to worship in more than a metaphorical sense. I’m talking literally . It is like pulling teeth to convince someone of their need to overcome their fear and begin witnessing...but how easy is it to just simply invite someone to church? I had a great idea this morning. How would it be if in our affluent nation, every Christian who drives, would with God’s help purchase a 15 passenger van and submit himself/herself in accountability to others (who also have their 15 passenger vans) to fill them up with people that they know who are unchurched, in order to bring them to worship. Every chauffeur would be exposing people to the Gospel, building community, and using their time and resources every week in an active ministry.
